Adelphi University New York

From My Desk President Christine M. Riordan

Dear Stuart,

At Adelphi, we are deeply committed to advancing change for the greater good. I’m proud to highlight our innovative community members who are exploring new approaches to sustainability, stewardship and mentoring for student and faculty success.

Aaren Freeman, PhD, who teaches environmental sustainability to our biology students, also conducts important work outside the classroom that restores and preserves our local environment. On our campus, Adelphi’s nationally acclaimed student Mentoring Program continues to thrive; its founding director shares details of our winning model this month. And our new Faculty Mentoring Academy is one way we’ve enhanced support for our colleagues. Finally, I’m pleased to recognize the advisory board of one of our schools and its direct impact on student success.

I look forward to welcoming our community back to Adelphi at the end of this month. Until then, wishing you a wonderful rest of summer.

All the best,
Chris

Making Greenskeeping Greener
Biology professor Aaren Freeman, PhD (second from left), is known for his efforts to bring oyster beds back to Oyster Bay, Long Island. Now he’s also pioneering a new way to fertilize the town’s golf courses—with kelp. It’s a great example of Adelphi's commitment to sustainability.

The Power of Advisory Boards
These boards—and their dedicated members—make critical contributions to advancing student success. For example, our Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology Advisory Board launched its first-ever fundraising initiative 10 years ago to help support PhD students from diverse backgrounds. That scholarship fund has since grown to $1.25 million.
