Community Message From Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
|
|
|
|
Saludos cordiales, Adelphi Community.
As we enter the fourth week of the fall semester, I want to take this opportunity to give a warm bienvenida to new and returning students, staff and faculty.
From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to honor the vibrant traditions, rich histories and invaluable contributions of Latinx and Hispanic communities in the United States and around the world.
Adelphi is proud to support and uplift our Latinx student body, faculty, staff, alumni and the local community. Our Fall 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is brought to us by various Adelphi units that hold a deep commitment to institutional servingness, including the:
I thank our campus partners for helping us celebrate and explore the diversity of the Latinx community together. Over the next month, I hope you’ll join us to learn about indigenous language preservation, the Hispanic and Latinx diaspora, the undocumented experience, Latinx civic participation and Latinx music, art and more.
Our campus collaborations will continue throughout the fall and spring semesters, too. In October, Adelphi will host the Long Island Latino Teachers Association’s Young Latino Men’s Conference for local high school students. In the spring, our Latin American and Latinx Studies program, Department of Art and Art History and the HSI Task Force will collaborate on a public art initiative that visually tells the story of Adelphi’s Latinx community.
These collaborations not only support Adelphi’s strategic goal to be designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution by growing enrollment to at least 25 percent full-time Hispanic undergraduate students, but they also contribute to creating a culturally rich environment that supports academic excellence and upward mobility.
As we continue to evolve in this direction, I acknowledge the dedication of the above-mentioned campus groups, as well as the Office of University Communications and Marketing, University Admissions and our Latinx faculty and staff who serve as advisers, mentors, translators and friends to our Latinx students and their families.
I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month events and look forward to sharing the richness of Latinidades with our entire community.

Two Students Reflect On Their Summer Adelphi Trip Abroad
|
|
|
|
Lynabby Bigord
Major: Social Work
From: Long Island, New York
Why did you want to join Adelphi on our summer trip to Spain and Morocco? I knew it was an opportunity to experience a different culture and country in a unique manner, with education, service and personal growth. Adelphi offers so many opportunities to learn inside and outside the classroom.
What was your favorite part of Spain? In Spain, I was inspired by the unity and respect regardless of what happened in history. Visiting the mosques and seeing the connection and respect of Islam in a country that is predominantly Catholic made me feel like humanity can survive regardless of hardship.
What was your favorite part of Morocco? It is rare to visit a country and be able to experience daily life as a resident of that country, so the homestay was one of my favorite parts of Morocco. For the time I was there, I really felt like I belonged in their family because they accepted me and cared for me like one of their own. It's a cool and unique experience to have felt part of a family and I felt very grateful to have experienced a Moroccan grandmother's love.
How did the trip impact your journey at Adelphi? I felt a rebirth as the semester started. I feel that this trip gave me a new perspective on life, my future career and especially my experience in the classroom. I can no longer look at culture and family through a single lens. I approach problems and solutions with cultural humility, especially when it comes to religious, political and personal values. I am much more aware of the diversity at Adelphi and acknowledge the differences and values around me. This experience has fostered respect for my peers and the different cultures at Adelphi and in my community. My experience with Adelphi's Morocco/Spain trip has taught me to think globally and to forget that I am just American. It made me realize that I prefer to be a global citizen.

Liliana Solimeo
Major: Nursing
From: New York City
Why did you want to join Adelphi on our summer trip to Spain and Morocco? I want to be able to help other people and make a difference on a global scale and hoped to gain a better cultural understanding of places outside America. I also hoped to meet new people and make lasting connections. I'm happy to say I did!
What was your favorite part of Spain? My favorite part of Spain was Granada, especially the ecological, regenerative and intercultural association based in El Valle. I enjoyed meeting new people and learning about their lives. Everyone there was so kind and accepting which allowed me to feel grateful for all I have here in America.
What was your favorite part of Morocco? This is a toss-up between the small home in the Rif Mountains and the artisan crafts in Chefchaouen. In the Rif Mountains, I enjoyed meeting the family and seeing how they live. I found it exceptionally interesting that—to us, their lives seem so interesting and foreign, while—to them, it is just everyday life. In Chefchaouen, I learned about the time and effort that goes into making leather bracelets. It helped me appreciate artisans around the world. An honorable mention would be the homestay, which was truly an amazing experience. My host mother was incredibly kind and made me feel like I was part of the family. I'm happy to know if I ever go back to Morocco, there will be friendly faces waiting for me.
How did the trip impact your journey at Adelphi? I can say with confidence that this trip was the BEST thing I could have done before coming to Adelphi. As a first-year student, I knew no one on the trip going in. By the time I left, I had 21 new friends; not just the students I went on the trip with, but fellow Moroccan students and administrators as well. I would encourage more students to consider travel opportunities with Adelphi, especially study abroad programs. They are not only educational opportunities but also chances to meet and help people.
