Community Message from Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
Dear Adelphi Community,
As we bid farewell to an academic semester and a calendar year, it is with enormous gratitude and admiration that I share my message this month.
2023 brought moments of fulfillment and achievement—like earning a sixth consecutive HEED Award and launching our inspiring Two Museums Program. It also brought times of challenge—including witnessing an international war that affects many of us deeply and personally.
Throughout, I have noticed how our students, faculty and staff embody compassion, care, learning, integrity, and connection. These are exceptional principles that define us at Adelphi.
You comprise a very special community, and I thank you for your dedication to fostering an inclusive and welcoming campus, for supporting one another and for embracing global and multicultural understanding. I profoundly appreciate every member of our robust and resilient community.
To our graduating students, I congratulate you on your achievements and wish you the very best. To those returning in the upcoming semester, I look forward to continuing our journey together.
I wish you a joyous and rejuvenating break filled with laughter, fun, celebration, reflection, and anticipation for an exceptional spring 2024 semester.

A University of Self-Advocacy and Autism Acceptance

According to Diana Damilatis-Kull ’10, MA ’12, MA ’14, director of Bridges to Adelphi, it is important to highlight autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and self-advocacy during National Disability Employment Awareness Month each year. One in every four Americans has a disability and ASD is the fastest-growing among all developmental disabilities.

Together, We
Learned More Deeply About One Another.

When
international conflicts affect us personally, culturally and ideologically, such as the war currently ongoing in Israel and Palestine, Adelphi’s primary mission of education and values of inclusivity, diversity and respect call upon us to foster understanding and provide greater context for what is happening in our world.
This past month, two distinct discussions with experts in their respective fields provided an opportunity to learn about the challenges that Muslim and Jewish community members face with the goal of growing awareness, understanding and care. The leaders also met with our student leaders.
On November 29, Avinoam J. Patt, PhD, presented The History of Antisemitism and Recent Examples in an American Context. Patt is the Doris and Simon Konover Chair of Judaic Studies and Director of the Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life at the University of Connecticut and the upcoming Maurice Greenberg Chair of Holocaust Studies at New
York University.
On December 6, Faiyaz Jaffer, PhD, presented The Muslim Student Experience on the College Campus. Jaffer is a research scholar for the Islamic
Center at New York University and associate chaplain for the NYU Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life, professor of Islamic Law and Islamic Spirituality at NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and visiting professor at the Chicago Theological Seminary.

Truth, Racial Healing and
Transformation Circles in 2024
In 2019, the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) selected Adelphi to join the second cohort of their Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation movement in the United States.
To this day, Adelphi is the only private institution in New York State to be a TRHT Campus Center.
The meaningful alignment between the TRHT framework and Adelphi University’s near-decade of strategic work to be a model of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging has nurtured an academic community that is prepared and eager to help change the false belief in a hierarchy of human value.

In 2024, the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging will host two TRHT Racial Healing Circles, powerful conversations of no more than 20 community members each. We hope you will join us on our continuing TRHT journey. Please save these
dates and watch for information about registering in the New Year. Monday, March 25, 2024- Faculty and Staff Circle in the morning
