Community Message From Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
December 2024

Dear Adelphi Community,

As 2024 comes to a close, I want to express my deepest gratitude for our Adelphi community’s resilience, compassion and commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and understanding.

At home and abroad, this year brought us some complex challenges and reminders to appreciate diverse perspectives, respect all cultures and beliefs and listen to one another through difficult conversations. Looking ahead, I hope you will continue to join me in fostering kindness and openness.

Before we end the year, I want to call your attention to this month's topics:

  • Please vote now for Adelphi in the KultureCity Award below to help us gain recognition for the outstanding ways we advance accessibility and inclusion.

  • In January, join Chotsani Williams West, EdD, MA ’07, assistant vice president of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and me to celebrate National Mentoring Month at our annual celebration.

  • In Spring 2025, participate in Adelphi's first-ever Diversity Campus Climate Survey to add your voice to our ongoing DEIB efforts.

Thank you, all, for your dedication to making Adelphi a place where everyone feels respected, valued and heard.

I wish our students all the best on finals, papers and projects and our entire community a joyful holiday season and a hopeful, peaceful New Year.

With gratitude,
R. Sentwali Bakari, PhD
Vice President
Student Affairs and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

Recognition for Inclusivity at Adelphi
Adelphi has been named a top finalist for the KultureCity Human Highlight Venue Award from the leading nonprofit on sensory accessibility and acceptance. Our selection recognizes our community's dedication to creating an inclusive and accessible campus for all.

In 2018, Adelphi partnered with KultureCity to become the first University to have an on-campus sensory room for students. We recently partnered with them again to make upgrades to the sensory room.

Diversity Campus Climate Survey
Our Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) will launch Adelphi’s first-ever Diversity Campus Climate Survey in 2025. All Adelphi students, faculty and staff will have a chance to share their valuable feedback.
The goal of the survey is to shine a light on how Adelphi's DEIB initiatives impact our overall environment and the daily individual experiences of students, faculty and staff.

Your input in the survey will be critical in helping us identify Adelphi's strengths and areas for improvement. It will provide important direction for strengthening our commitment to an inclusive, caring and welcoming academic community, in alignment with Adelphi's Momentum 2 Strategic Plan.

Process
  • The Office of DEIB will collaborate with the University Diversity Committee, Academic Diversity Implementation Team and Institutional Research and Strategic Analytics.
  • A third-party organization will administer the survey to ensure confidentiality.
  • All students, faculty and staff will be invited to participate in the survey.

Next Steps

  • The survey will launch to our entire University community—stay tuned for the announcement.
  • Survey results will be shared with our community, along with clear priorities and actionable steps to address identified areas of improvement.
Students, faculty and staff members of all backgrounds, belief systems and individual expressions will feel welcome and valued, with equal access to the opportunities and support they need to succeed at Adelphi and beyond. —Momentum 2
Thank you to all our faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, families and visitors who joined us for Adelphi's Winter Lighting Spectacular! It was a wonderful time to spend together.

In these sessions, participants...
  • Reflect upon an understanding of differences.
  • Develop deeper cross-cultural understanding.
  • Hear other perspectives and experiences.
  • Build a supportive network of allies on our campus.
