Community Message from Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
JUNE 2024
Dear Adelphi Community,
Tomorrow is Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of African American enslavement in the United States nearly 160 years ago, in 1865. It marks a significant milestone in our country’s shared history and is a testament to the progress we continue to make together.
I thank our Department of African, Black, and Caribbean Studies for partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging to host Adelphi’s annual Juneteenth celebration earlier this month. Together, we reflected on our progress and paid tribute to those who have fought for a more equitable world. I am grateful to Fabian Burrell for coordinating the event and Carolyn Springer, PhD, for her insightful remarks.
June is also Pride Month. I am deeply grateful for our community’s unwavering support and active participation in fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals. I am proud that our LGBTQIA+ peers and colleagues, friends and family feel seen, safe and
nurtured at Adelphi.

Honoring Juneteenth
On June 7, our Department of African, Black, and Caribbean Studies and Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging hosted Adelphi’s annual Juneteenth celebration.
Celebrating Pride Month
On May 2, our Multicultural Center and Adelphi Pride Committee hosted Adelphi’s annual Pride March and Festival. The event was held ahead of Pride Month in June while classes were still in session so that as many community members as possible could participate.
Multicultural Center — An inclusive environment for cross-cultural interaction that fosters and affirms all individuals, the center is open to all community members.
