Message From the Provost

A university provides an environment where some of society's most important issues are studied from diverse perspectives. In this edition of Scholars and Artists of Adelphi University, I'm proud to showcase work on the subject of labor that has been undertaken by Adelphi University faculty members from a variety of disciplines. Whether studying government policy or raising awareness of labor practices, faculty scholars have a vital role in informing the national dialogue. I hope you will find this dive into the unique viewpoints and contributions of our faculty meaningful and impactful.

Additionally, as a reminder of the power of the arts to shine light on our society, we are sharing a very personal dance performance choreographed by a member of our dance faculty. Please enjoy watching and learning about this piece—it is one of many examples of collaboration between Adelphi’s faculty and students to create something extraordinary.

Sincerely,
Christopher Storm, PhD
Provost and Executive Vice President

A Look at Labor History

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire is one of the deadliest industrial disasters in American history, taking the lives of 146 workers in Manhattan on March 25, 1911. This tragedy led to the transformation of New York’s labor code and new fire safety measures modeled nationwide.

Robert Linné, PhD, professor of education, is a scholar of this tragic event. He co-authored the book
The New York City Triangle Factory Fire and is on the board of directors of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition, an organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Triangle Factory workers. Dr. Linné produced a short film on the organization’s effort to create a memorial, directed by Joan Stein Schimke, professor of film and video production, and with contributions from Adelphi film students.
