Community Message from Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

Dear Adelphi Community,
As war between Israel and Hamas enters a sixth week, I worry about how we can avoid fanning the flames of antisemitism and Islamophobia. The reality of deeply held perspectives on the issue—whether personal, political, religious, or ideological—must not shake our conviction to respect and care for one another and to condemn all forms of violence and terrorism in the world.
It is important that times like these don’t fray our connectedness or deter us from our values of inclusivity, diversity, respect, and care. In fact, at the heart of our work as a Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Campus Center is the goal to change society’s narrative by first doing so here—at Adelphi.
To guide us in gaining deeper knowledge and more genuine understanding, I have arranged for two remarkable keynote presentations for our community, which I share in detail below. I encourage all who can attend in person at our Garden City campus to participate in these timely
opportunities to grow, connect and learn more deeply.
For those feeling shaken, unsettled, and sad, please know that you are not alone. I recognize our community members' emotions and want to reassure you that we are strong together. Please reach out if you need support.
Coming up this week, I hope you can join in some International Education Week events
happening at Adelphi. Also, this month, take time to appreciate the heritage of Native Americans, perhaps by attending the Multicultural Center’s documentary screening of Gather this Wednesday, and to support our transgender friends and community members by attending our Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil on November 20.
Lastly, with Thanksgiving approaching, I want to express my gratitude for our community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are uniquely committed to being good to one another and positively influencing our world. Our University strives to be a model of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging—and I know we are.

Learning more deeply about the
challenges that Muslim and Jewish community members face. When international conflicts affect us personally, culturally and ideologically, Adelphi’s primary mission of education and values of inclusivity, diversity and respect call upon us to foster understanding and provide greater context for what is happening in our world. Since recent world events have spurred tension, divisiveness and harmful rhetoric at other college campuses, Adelphi is seeking to provide a platform for learning and for nurturing our environment of inclusivity and belonging.
Through two distinct discussions with experts in their respective fields, we will have the opportunity to learn about the challenges that Muslim and Jewish community members face. Common sensitivities and misunderstandings will be discussed with the goal of increasing awareness, understanding and care.
PLEASE JOIN US FOR BOTH EVENTS:
—a presentation and Q&A with Avinoam J. Patt, PhD.

A Multicultural Center
Screening
|
|
|
|
On November 14, the Multicultural Center invites our Adelphi community to a screening of the 2020 documentary Gather, which chronicles the efforts of indigenous people working to preserve and reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through food sovereignty.
Gather follows Nephi Craig, a chef from the White Mountain Apache Nation in Arizona, opening an indigenous café as a nutritional recovery clinic; Elsie Dubray, a scientist from the Cheyenne River Sioux Nation in South Dakota, conducting landmark studies on bison; and the Ancestral Guard, a group of environmental activists from the Yurok Nation in Northern California, trying to save the Klamath river.
