Dear Friends: We proudly present this installment of Ascend. Meet our diverse and talented new faculty. We take pride in Adelphi’s new undergraduate law review and the public art mural project celebrating the Latin American and Latinx heritage of our faculty and students. Our faculty continue to win prestigious external grants (for example, assistant professor of physics Kevin Liang, PhD’s National Science Foundation grant). Our Shakespearean, Associate Dean for Student Success Strategic Initiatives Louise Geddes, PhD, makes a strong case for the enduring value of the humanities. We continue the
“What Can You Do With a Degree in …” alumni series with English.
Finally, we invite you to follow the College of Arts and Sciences on Instagram at @adelphi_cas.

Criminal justice major Peyten DeRouen is laser focused on a career in law, and saw an opportunity when she learned that Adelphi didn’t have a law journal for undergraduates: She set out to create one. Established by students, the Adelphi Undergraduate Law Review is a forum for undergrads from all disciplines to engage in research while sharpening their analytical and writing abilities.

An English degree is the ultimate multitasker—every professional field imaginable prizes the ability to write, read and communicate effectively. Hear about the careers launched by two of our Department of English alumnae—Ariyana Felician ’20, MA ’21, a public school teacher, and Caitlin Lenahan ’18, a digital resources specialist librarian—and the infinite possibilities available to English majors.

Opinion: Why Study the Humanities, Anyway?
|
Artificial intelligence. Deep fakes. Social media misinformation. It’s not always easy to tell what’s real—what’s human—anymore.
In this essay, Louise Geddes, PhD, professor of English and associate dean for student success strategic initiatives in the College of Arts and Sciences, makes the case for traditional studies as an antidote to the downsides of our rapidly changing world.

Adelphi Physics Professor Awarded NSF Grant With
Implications Both Microscopic and as Vast as Outer Space
|
Kevin Liang, PhD, assistant professor of physics, received a $242,300 grant from the National Science Foundation for a project that will study “super-resolution” techniques, which can push the boundaries of how well an imaging system—from telescopes observing outer space to microscopes viewing tiny bacteria—can image small details.
