Dear Friend,
Just months before my first-year Orientation, I lost my mother to a battle with cancer. I had no idea what to expect from college or myself at that point, but I knew one thing for sure: I could go home to see my father if I needed to, with a 30-minute drive down the Southern State Parkway.
When I finally arrived at Eddy Hall, something about Adelphi just felt right. I loved being on campus. I’m sure you can think back to your own moments at Adelphi—the ones that made it feel like home. For me, it was the relationships I built—with the faculty who guided me, the peers who became family, my fraternity brothers, and the woman who would become my wife. I can trace every opportunity I’ve received since graduation back to a relationship fostered during my time at Adelphi.
Now, as an alumnus who serves on the Advisory Council, it’s incredible to see how much Adelphi has grown while still keeping that spirit. Every visit reminds me why this place means so much to so many of us.
As a Black man raised by Jamaican immigrant parents and shaped by the New York City public school system, I want to take a moment to recognize Black History Month and everything it stands for. Wherever you are in your journey, keep moving forward with pride and purpose. Remember, what you do with your today will affect your tomorrow. Our stories matter, our voices matter, and our future is bright.
