Walking the Talk
I often talk about pluralism. I do so as an organizing principle for my scholarship when describing the collision of individual identities and their differences in relation to those of another. I have described these as at once wicked and wonderful. I have also invoked pluralism most recently when describing my vision for Derner, how we have become many programs and disciplines in psychology, how this pluralism poses challenges and opportunities. I have even playfully described us as E Pluribus Derner—a reference to our nation’s traditional motto.
Now our country is faced with walking E Pluribus Unum. Here, I would humbly suggest we are not simply bipartisan, but rather pluralistic—many voices and interests, brutal and brilliant in relation. The challenge, especially as psychologists, is to hold all the associated experiences, from outrage to empathy, to suffer and celebrate the complexity—to walk the talk and to carry this on in our work. Is it distraction or dedication to this challenge to attend to our work? Maybe both! At least our work can bring us a sense of efficacy and hope.
In this regard, I would like to highlight what our students (from undergraduate to postgraduate) have accomplished thus far in the calendar year 2024. Under the mentorship of our faculty, our students have presented at the following 24 conferences across the United States (eight different states) and in Canada, Mexico, the UK, and in the EU (six different countries). (See News section for the full list of conferences.)
I must admit, I was surprised when I requested the names of conferences with Derner representation and saw this comprehensive list that shows the diversity of our interests. It says a lot about Derner today and especially about our pluralistic impulse. I am truly appreciative of our students and their mentors for all their work and dedication in sharing their knowledge. |

The APA Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy (APA Division 29) presented J. Christopher Muran, PhD, with its 2024 Distinguished Psychologist Award for Contributions to Psychology and Psychotherapy. This latest award comes on the heels of his other recent accolades: Senior Researcher Distinguished Career Award from the Society for Psychotherapy Research and the Alfred M. Wellner Lifetime Achievement Award for Research Excellence from the National Register of Health Service Psychologists.
