Anticipation and Trepidation
For me, this time of year has always come with excitement as I anticipated a new school year.
When I was younger, it was associated with the possibility of new shoes (depending on how much I grew!). As I look forward, I’m excited to meet new challenges with my co-leaders and colleagues regarding our various programs (from undergraduate to postgraduate—we are many while still one Derner) and to welcome new faculty, who will be contributing across programs: Emily Cowan, PhD, Naama Gershy, PhD, and Emma Freetly Porter, PhD.
I cannot help but acknowledge the backdrop of what is happening on political fronts nationally and internationally. There is so much that is worrisome. In this regard, I have always taken comfort in trying to focus on controlling what you can control. So care for those you can (family, friends and patients), be respectful to the many others you encounter (imagine walking in their shoes), and don’t forget to vote (one of our most sacred responsibilities). And remember the sentiment “You’ll never walk alone” (a favorite refrain in my family). |

For more than four decades, Jonathan Jackson, PhD, served as a professor, friend and mentor to all who walked the halls of the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology. Join us in honoring Dr. Jackson’s legacy by supporting this initiative to facilitate transformative conversations, ensuring lasting excellence in clinical psychology education. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in the lives of our students and is greatly appreciated.
