INSIGHTS The Gordan F. Derner School of Psychology Newsletter
August 2023
Dear Derner Community:

I feel very honored and privileged to be writing to you all—our faculty, staff, students and alumni—as the seventh dean of our storied School. As individuals and as a community, you are vital to continuing Derner’s growth and success.

Let me start by thanking all those who contributed to the search process and to our retiring dean, Jacques Barber, PhD, for his stewardship of our school, his hard work on behalf of our community, his many contributions and, perhaps most of all, his integrity. He has set a high bar for me and future deans.

As many of you know, my journey to this point in my personal and professional life has afforded me many opportunities that have sensitized me to the potentials in negotiating differences—critical to informing my research, teaching and service. Though there are differences in Derner’s professional and foundational identities, these have only advanced and can further advance how we understand and can help the human condition. We are positioned more than ever to better realize our overall identity as an integrative, empirically informed school of psychology with a long psychoanalytic tradition and commitment to social justice.

In the coming weeks, months and years, I hope that you will see the results of our shared work and that the pride you have in Derner is only intensified.

Please join me as we chart this progress in the Derner Insights newsletter.

Regards,
J. Christopher Muran, PhD
Dean and Professor
