Dear Students and Colleagues, We hear it all the time: network, network, network. We all know that networking is extremely important for business majors, so we have lots of exciting events planned for the remainder of the semester where our students can engage in networking. Our annual Honors and Awards Ceremony will take place on April 27. Our accounting volleyball networking event is scheduled for May 5. A senior celebration lunch will be held on May 19. In addition, we have a number of other events listed below. Read on to see some of our recent happenings.

Diversity Council Launches College Rise Program
College Rise is the result of a collaborative effort by the Uniondale superintendent of schools and the Willumstad School’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Council members David Machlis, PhD, associate professor of finance and economics, and Joseph Celentano, MBA ’04, senior adjunct faculty member. Seventeen high school students are participating in this two-year program that includes weekly sessions at Uniondale High School as well as visits to the Adelphi campus where they will attend campus events and they will also have the opportunity to earn a scholarship for a college credit course in personal finance.

Don Center Panel Addresses Sourcing Strategies
Professor Jiang Zhang, PhD, moderated an Elizabeth and Allen Don Center for Innovative Technology and Decision Sciences event on sourcing strategies. Three industry experts shared their knowledge and best practices for procurement and strategic sourcing. The panelists included Marlene Johnson, senior sourcing manager at Assurant, Lawrence Kane, member of SIG Sourcing Supernova Hall of Fame, and Marcell Vollmer, PhD, chief executive officer at Prospitalia Group.

Business Majors Participate in Bhisé Global Learning Experience
Made possible by a generous donation from Bharat Bhisé, MBA ’78, this program provided eight select members of Adelphi’s Levermore Global Scholars (LGS) program with an all-expenses-paid trip to India. The trip is paired with a semester of on-campus cultural and academic opportunities. Amanda Frånstedt, senior finance major, and Rakesh Gupta, associate professor of decision sciences and marketing, were among those who participated in this experience.

Congratulations to Monish Churaman and Amita Radakichenane for winning first place ($5,000) at the 2023 Adelphi University Robert B. Willumstad School of Business's Business Plan Competition for their proposal for SmileLab Printing Technologies. Ashley Zingale was the second-place winner ($3,000) with a proposed app called Money Moving Up. Third place went to Gloria Gantt, for her proposed not-for-profit called Better Health Connects. In addition to winning $2,000 for third prize, she also won another $1,000 for the best socially responsible plan.

C. Richard Baker, PhD, professor of accounting and law, and Ganesh Pandit, DBA, associate professor of accounting and law, were selected as the recipients of the Accounting Historians Journal’s 2021 Best Paper Award for their research article, “Historical Development of the Standard Audit Report in the U.S.: Form, Scope, and Renewed Attention to Fraud Detection.”
Stephanie Berger, MBA ’89, adjunct professor of marketing, participated as a panelist at the 2022 Church Benefits Association annual meeting on November 30, 2022, on the following topic: “Wayfinding a New Normal: The Great Resignation and Employee/Participant Wellness and Financial Security.”
Pamela Buckle, PhD, MA ’13, professor of management, has completed all qualifying exams and is now a licensed psychoanalyst in the state of New York.
James Hazy, EdD, professor of management, was a guest speaker at the Cluj Economics and Business Seminar Series at Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on December 15, 2022. His seminar was titled: “The New Discipline of Work Team Process Engineering.” Separately, Dr. Hazy was also selected for Life Membership in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Adjunct faculty member Sheyi Oladipo’s article, “Female entrepreneurs managing from home,” has been published in Small Business Economics.
A letter by Mariano Torras, PhD, professor and chair of finance and economics, titled “T-bills are shaky edifice of a make-believe economy,” was published in the January 27 issue of the Financial Times.
Karen Wallace, CPA, visiting assistant professor of accounting and law, was featured in Fortune for providing insights on preparing for tax season.
Professor Jiang Zhang, PhD’s co-authored paper, “Call option contract in a supply chain with random yield and random demand using downconversion approach,” was published in the Journal of Modelling in Management in January 2023.
Winston Spencer Waters, JD, MBA ’15, associate professor of accounting and law, authored a research article titled “The Use of Trusts for Medicaid Planning,” which was published in the Business Law Review, the official publication of the North Atlantic Regional Business Law Association.
Laura Messano, senior lecturer of management, spoke at the Adelphi University Teaching and Learning Conference explaining the business school's initiative with the nonprofit Network Support Services and the Mindfulness Resolution Project.
Ganesh Pandit, DBA, associate professor of accounting and law, was quoted in a March 1 article by WSHU Public Radio titled “State Lawmakers Consider Mandated Financial Literacy Courses in New York Schools.” Dr. Pandit discusses the importance of teaching students money management skills.
