Dear Fellow Panthers,
When I graduated from Adelphi in January 1966, our nation was at war. Rather than wait to be drafted, I chose to enlist in the U.S. Army that spring. Looking back nearly 60 years later, I realize that decision—and the education that prepared me to make it—set the course for a lifetime of service.
After basic and advanced infantry training, I was selected for Officer Candidate School. As a second lieutenant, I served as a platoon leader with the Quick Reaction Force in the Korean Demilitarized Zone before becoming a battalion operations officer. I was wounded in action and was honored to receive the Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge. Those experiences shaped me in ways that have stayed with me throughout my life.
When my military service ended, my commitment to serving others did not. I worked with the Suffolk County Boy Scouts before beginning a 40-year career in healthcare as an ultrasound specialist. Along the way, I supervised hospital ultrasound departments, taught future healthcare professionals at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn, NYU Medical Center and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and helped uphold national standards for ultrasound education as an accreditation site visitor.
Retirement opened yet another chapter of service and growth for me. Through the Veterans Writing Workshop at Fordham University, I have published approximately 30 short stories—many inspired by the experiences and people who have shaped my life. Two years ago, I earned medals in three events at the National Veterans Golden Age Games. Last year, cancer treatment forced me to step away from competition, but after chemotherapy, immunotherapy, two bouts of pneumonia and months of recovery, I am grateful to be cancer-free. At 82, despite lingering neuropathy, I am preparing to compete once again in the 50- and 100-meter sprints, javelin, discus and shot put.
These days, you’ll still find me on the softball field every Sunday and on the golf course each week with a veterans league sponsored by the Metropolitan PGA. I also enjoy spending time with my family in Ossining, New York, including my son—an author—and my grandson, who, at nearly 13 years old, is already taller than I am.
Adelphi gave me more than a degree. It gave me the confidence to lead, the curiosity to keep learning and the foundation for a life devoted to serving others. Whether in uniform, in a hospital, in a classroom or among fellow veterans, I’ve tried to honor those values every step of the way.

Elliot Gordon’s journey of service began through Cornell University’s Naval ROTC program, then continued aboard the USS Cheboygan County (LST-533) and later in Kodiak, Alaska. While stationed there, he applied to Adelphi, and went on to earn his master’s degree. His Adelphi education opened the door to a distinguished career in toxicology, spanning decades. He also continued his service in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring with the rank of commander. |
