Welcome, friends, to the fall semester!
It is always exciting to be back on campus facing the promise of a new academic year, and this fall is no exception. We are embracing the excitement that our new president, Michael Balboni ’81, JD, is bringing to campus and enjoying meeting the new cohort of Panthers as they embark upon their Adelphi journey. Below we invite you to meet members of the Class of 2030—I’m sure you will understand why we’re delighted to welcome them to campus.
Our newsletter offers a taste of the wonderful, diverse conversations happening across our College. We explore the distinct paths that three of our alumni have taken with their biology degrees, exemplifying how the liberal arts empower our students to find their own unique routes to success. Similarly, our highlight of the Honorable Melanie Cradle ’93, JD, shows how one alumna has moved from the classroom to the courtroom across her impressive career. I also invite you to watch our brief video on how Associate Professor Adelheid B. Strelick found her sense of belonging through dance, and how she brings that to her classroom on a daily basis.
Finally, Department of Communications faculty Peggy Cassidy, PhD, and Anna Akerman Berman, PhD, offer a thought-provoking consideration of what smartphone technology might be doing to our brains.
One alternative to connecting to us through technology, then, might be to come see us in person! Our Spirit Weekend celebrations are coming soon and we invite our entire community to join us for a tremendous weekend of fun events and connecting with the Adelphi community. You can register for Spirit Weekend here. |

Scrolling feels like relaxation after a long day, but it might be doing the opposite. Adelphi University Department of Communications professors Anna Akerman Berman, PhD, and Peggy Cassidy, PhD, break down how tech companies are keeping us hooked, and why 200 years of media panic offers surprising lessons for today. |

Adelheid B. Strelick, associate professor of dance, grew up all over the world, leaving her feeling that she never really “belonged” anywhere. A trip to the India of her childhood made her reconsider the idea of belonging—and led her to work with Adelphi dance students to create a dance that said “belonging” to them. |
